about

Rising South African newcomer James Deacon releases his debut EP ‘The Calling’ on July 26th through Bad Future Records. A sonic tapestry weaving soul, rock, hip-hop and pop into a release that offers us a deeply personal glimpse into the life of the 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist.

After a life-threatening accident left him unable to play the instruments that he’d learned to love (violin & guitar), James’s rehabilitation and determination propelled him to pursue a musical career regardless.

Together with recording outfit Bad Future Records, the Johannesburg-based musician has created an EP that defies genre convention, with influences that range from John Mayer to Nirvana to Al Green.

'The Calling EP' features six tracks including Deacon’s powerful debut single ‘Not Givin’ Up’, which reached #2 on the Hype Machine chart, follow up track ‘Calling Home', his most recent single 'Son Of Apollo,' plus three brand new tracks; ‘Look Out’, ‘Monster and Me’ and his brand new single ‘Mamma’ which James explains is “about how technology and social media has destroyed my generation.”

Track Name: Not Givin' Up
Not Givin' Up

Don't wait up
I'm not coming home
I'm done chasing
I'm done wasting
I'm not facing the grave

Lock the door
Throw away the key
Dreams are waiting
Needs creating
It’s liberating for me

Don't look down
Keep moving on
It’s destiny
Ready to be won

I'm gonna leave this town
It’s not for me
The ground is breaking
Hands are shaking
It’s my awakening

(Lord help me now)
I'm not givin’ up
(Don't wait up)
I'm not living up
(Lord help me now)
So just fill my cup
Get on up get on up now
(Lord help me now)
I'm not givin’ up
(‘Cause imma tear it down)
I'm not living up
(Tear it down)
So just fill my cup
Get on up get on up now
(Tear it down)
Don't wait up

Hey I'm living free stop
Tell me what you see stop
Me stop
He said she said we stop
Unlock me use the cage as a backdrop
Eyes on me my whole life is a mic drop
Out of the wild I got my fire from the lighting
King of the jungle as my grip is tightening
Look at my smile see sharp teeth are shining
Eyes dilate as my prey stops fighting
Did I deserve the treatment you gave me through all of the years I accept that maybe
Without the pain and the struggles that you put in my way see I wouldn't be the man that stands before you today
I had to learn to be heartless turn the light into darkness flip the switch on all the things that kept me back like a harness
The only way is up now gotta pick it up now left then a right combination gets a knockout

Don't wait up
I'm not coming home
I'm done chasing
I'm done wasting
I'm not facing the grave

Lock the door
Throw away the key
Dreams are waiting
needs creating
Its liberating for me

(Lord help me now)
I'm not givin’ up...

Track Name: Calling Home
Time runs like lines across your face
Chemicals running through your veins
Gathered around you like an altar
Praying to Gods I don't Believe in

How do I see sense in all this pain
When my hero's gone where will I shelter from the rain
Oh I know they're calling you home
Oh I know they're calling you home

‘Cause even when a star burns out you'll see it for a thousand years
I'll live every day for you I'll never let them see my tears
‘Cause even when a star burns out you'll see it for a thousand years
I'll live every day for you I'll never let them see my fears

Don't you be sad about my passing
I was surely born to die on this day
I carried the weight of my life upon my shoulders
Until the day when my legs couldn't hold no more

Oh don't you see all my pain is gone
You will find your way to shelter from the storm
Oh I know they're calling me home
Oh I know they're calling me home

‘Cause even when a star burns out you'll see it for a thousand years
I'll live every day for you I'll never let them see my tears
‘Cause even when a star burns out you'll see it for a thousand years
I'll live every day for you I'll never let them see my fears

But you left the light on
Before you go I want you to know
Forever I am gonna leave the light on
‘Cause even when a star burns out you'll see it for a thousand years
Track Name: Son of Apollo
Don't waste my time
Draw that line
Won't stop coming
Gonna go all night
Flip that switch
Take that coin
Catch myself
Tryna stay in time
Slips away
Fade to grey
Running a running a running away
Splashing water on my face
Running a running a running away

Your light burns me like I'm evil
This love hurts me like it’s hell
Your touch warms me like a needle
Now I'm falling for your spell
You’re my military
Making my insides turn to machinery

OK it's done
He's on his way
Going back
No no no way
Soon I'll be
Soon you'll see
Ride white horses in the cavalry
Now I'm free
Eyes on me
Promise that'll never happen to me
Keep it moving follow me
Promise that'll never happen to me

Your light burns me like I'm evil
This love hurts me like it’s hell
Your touch warms me like a needle
Now I'm falling for your spell
Your light burns me like I'm evil
Your love hurts me like it's hell
You’re my military
Making my insides turn to machinery

Youth is getting old
It’s feeling like a handicap
Wisdom tells me I should
Cherish every drop from out the tap
I can see a ghost in the crowd
Or maybe it's a shadow cast from the clouds
Your light burns me like I'm evil
This love hurts me like it’s hell
Your touch warms me like a needle
Now I'm falling for your spell

Your light burns me like I'm evil
Your love hurts me like it's hell
You’re my military
Making my insides turn to machinery
Track Name: Mamma
I don't wanna be the same
I don't wanna concede
I left the bridges in flame
Sparked my need to succeed
But when I look around
Faces facing the ground
Locations are shared
But no one is found
The world keeps praising all your ignorance telling you
There ain't nothing wrong with that
Creating generations screen protected animations
Now they don't know how to straighten their back
So tired of hearing how somebody hurt your feelings from a hundred thousand miles away
Stand up child turn it off for a while and you'll see that you have gone astray
Look at me what do you say
No stopping till you know my name

Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Yeah
Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Mamma didn't raise no quitter

(rap)
Takin’ my piece of the prize
Trying to capitalise shift
Typing circles round the eyes
Effect of butterflies change is coming
Endless enterprise
Try to humanize code is running
Hypnotise all the O's and ones align falling
I was born to see my name posted on your wall
Gave up on my past and now I'm answering the call
Open up my mind upon the canvas no control
Altering the future to delete my self control

(Breakdown)
I need the masses to follow my footsteps
Won't stop till I become
One of your false messiahs
Keep rolling till the battle’s won ‘cause

Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Mamma didn't raise no quitter
Yeah
Track Name: Look Out
Gimme a shot
Click boom
What do you want?
I'm digging a hole
Showroom
For what I got
Deliver me now
I'm past present and future
Turning around
Realise I'm the shooter
I am the vote that's been cast
The words are too fast
The lies that won't last
The time that flew past
I am the new master
Kinda spell caster
Whirlwind disaster
Listen the mission to stand at the top
I am the, I am the cream of the crop
The angel has fallen I rise to the calling the spark that's in me lights the gas on the floor

Look out keep your eyes on me
Lead you to the, lead to the promised land
Follow me just follow me take my hand

When you’re a dead man walking you better be dressed to kill
The lead man talking his name at the top of the bill
Ain't no stopping I'm doing it for the thrill
Best believe I am the red and the blue pill
Got the room filled got my free will got to move on making you feel
Like
I got the, I got the, I got the plan
Look out for what I have got in my hand
Follow me to the incredible land
Your head to the sky and your mind in the sand

Look out keep your eyes on me
Lead you to the lead to the promised land
Follow me just follow me take my hand
Track Name: Monster & Me
It calls out to me like I
Sent a signal to the sky
Asking when and where and why
Am I going to die?
X2

It’s following me home
It’s swallowing me whole
It’s easy to see oh
Eyes through a keyhole
Pierce like a needle
It’s easy to see oh
The monster is me

Hi, it’s the monster under your bed
Imaginary creature
I’m the one that's in your head
In your dreams I get a feature
I'm the noise out in the shed
Pulling at your mind like a thread
Never ending animated monotony
You will never be what you wanna be
Never fall asleep never follow me
Being the black sheep never bothered me
Back on your own back to the wall
Only position that you've ever known
You are alone nowhere to roam
Can't even breathe your cover is blown

It calls out to me like I
Sent a signal to the sky
Asking when and where and why
Am I going to die?
X2

It’s following me home
It’s swallowing me whole
The monster is me
Eyes through a keyhole
Pierce like a needle
It’s easy to see oh
The monster is me

It’s following me home
It’s swallowing me whole
It’s easy to see oh
Eyes through a keyhole
Pierce like a needle
It’s easy to see oh
The monster is me
